Upon your arrival at Kushok Bakula Airport, Leh (situated at a height of 3,500 meters), enjoy a warm welcome by our tour representatives and then a transfer to hotel. The day is kept free for acclimatization. During the day, acclimatize yourself with the weather and high pressure of Ladakh. In evening visit Shanti Stupa, the central Chowkhang Monastery and the local markets as well. Overnight stay at hotel in Leh.

DAY 02 : Leh To Tilat Sumdo Via Chilling (3 Hours By Road)- Hike To Campsite At Tilat Sumdo (3100 M) (02 Km/1 Hour)

Leh – Chilling -Tilat Sumdo

Early in the morning, proceed towards Shanti Stupa, a sacred Buddhist stupa. Enjoy the beautiful view of sunrise and the panoramic sight of the town of Leh. Later we leave by private vehicles with our support staff to begin this amazing and most exciting winter trek (January-February). The roller-coaster ride takes you along the Indus to the village of Nimu, where the Zanskar converges into Indus. After stopping at this confluence point for some time to take in the view, the drive continues and the road begins descending right into the river valley. There are quite a few heart-stopping moments as the vehicle negotiates the steep hairpin bends over snow covered road. The road goes past Chilling to Tilat Sumdo. Among these mammoth mountains, the feeling of insignificance of one’s being does not escape anyone.

The way to Tilat Sumdo is an adrenaline gushing one as the journey is bumpy with hairpin bends that will leave you tightly gripping your seats. However the stunning views around will take your breath away. To reach the campsite, you have to cross the frozen Zanskar River, and this will be the start of your Chadar Trek expedition. As the evening approaches, you will have to set up your tents quickly and get inside your warm, comfortable sleeping bags. The temperature here drops in a matter of minutes. Keep yourself warm inside the tents and get some good rest before the real journey starts on the following day. Overnight stay at Camps.

DAY 03 : Tilat Sumdo To Camp At Gyalpo (3170 M) (12 Km/6 Hours)

Tilat Sumdo – Gyalpo

Early in the morning, get ready for the walk on the frozen river for about 12 km to reach Gyalpo. The biggest challenge of this day, and all the remaining days, is to get out of the warm toasty sleeping bags and go out into the giant freezer outside; but the steaming cups of tea being served provide ample motivation. Today is a long walking session, about 12 km, on the Chadar. The guide will give you advice on do’d and dont’s during the journey. The trek leaders give a briefing about the day, and give tips on how to walk on the Chadar. Depending on the weather, the Chadar can assume various forms. The thickness of ice on the river is varies at many places, so it is advisable to follow the guide. Eventually you get used to walking on the Chadar, which looks like a cross between gliding and skating.

Keep yourself hydrated throughout to keep the blood circulation good in the body. En route, you will be served soupy noodles for nutrition. To reach the campsite in Gyalpo, trek past Shingra Koma, a huge camping ground. After passing Shingra Koma, you reach the camp-site for the day at Gyalpo, where the tents have already been pitched by the porters. The Gyalpo campsite is at a bend in the river, surrounded by high peaks and walls of rock-faces which almost look man-made. On reaching the campsite in Gyalpo, relax and soak in the views of the surrounding areas. Overnight stay at Camps.

DAY 04 : Gyalpo To Dib Cave/Tibb (3225 M) (14 Km/8 Hours)

Gyalpo – Dibb/Tibb Cave

After breakfast in the morning, commence your journey for the day to Dib Cave – almost 14 km. But that is nothing to worry about, all the walking keeps you incredibly warm. The trek from Gyalpo to Tibb is a long one. It is also one of the most beautiful days of the trek. Today’s walk through the deep ravines of the Zanskar is stunning. The sublime walls of the mountains on either sides of the river keep the sunlight away from the Chadar for most part of the day. There are numerous caves in these mountains, big and small. Today is the day when you can see frozen waterfalls, some higher than the others. A couple of hours into the days walk brings you to a massive waterfall on the left. Prayer flags flutter on the trees in front of the waterfall. You know that the place is revered by the Ladakhis. Surprisingly the waterfall is not frozen. Notice the greenish moss growing on the rocks under the water.

The lunch point for the day is exactly mid way and under an overhang of rocks. Post lunch, the Zanskar river passes through narrow gorges where the width of the river can be covered by 4 people holding hands. The narrow gorge hardly gets any sunlight and so the river is nonexistent. Generally, a thick chadar forms end to end here. Two more hours of walk through the various hues and forms of Chadar brings you to a large camping area on your right – Tibb. Once you reach Dib, you will see a large cave- the place where you will halt for the night and rest. Butter tea will be served. Enjoy overnight stay at the campsite.

DAY 05 : Dib Cave/Tibb To Camp At Naerak (3390 M) (10.5 Km/7 Hours)

Dibb/Tibb Cave – Naerak

Today is the most spectacular of all days on this trek. Today, you will trek the most beautiful part of the region. Walking on the river you cross deep gorges and reach a point where Juniper trees are covered with prayer flags. Witness the largest frozen waterfall and prayer flags. In summers, the bridge built next to the site of the waterfall is generally used to reach Zanskar from Leh. The bridge is an old wooden bridge but can still take wait of 4-5 people at once. Its a nice experience walking on the rickety bridge and catching the sight of the waterfall from the top. Thereafter, proceed towards the village of Naerak to witness the life of locals here and understand their way of living. The Naerak village lies several feet above the river, a vigorous hour-long trek can take you to the village if you want to see the life of a Zanskari. Stay overnight at the village camp comfortably.

DAY 06 : Naerak To Tibb Cave

Naerak – Dibb/Tibb Cave

Today, get ready for the return trip and proceed to Tibb. And if you thought that it was just a matter of retracing your steps back to Chilling, you can think again. The Zanskar River reacts to the slightest change of temperature, and constantly keeps repackaging itself. The Chadar would have assumed a completely new form, and will it will almost be impossible to say whether you have been here before. The return trail again would be difficult because the river quickly reacts to any change in the temperature and quickly takes changes to a new form. On the way, you can meet a lot of locals wearing their traditional woolen Gonchas – some of them monks who are hiking from the Lingshed Monastery to Leh, some of them young students accompanied by their parents returning to their schools in Leh after the winter vacation. They are suitably adept to the climate and seem very much at home in the sub-zero temperature and the biting cold winds. Nothing wipes the smiles off their faces and dampens the warmth of their spirit. Upon arrival at Dib Cave, relax and stay overnight at the campsite.

DAY 07 : Tibb To Shingra Koma

Dibb/Tibb Cave – Shingra Koma

In the morning, get ready to leave Tibb and proceed to Shingra Koma, crossing Gyalpo. The high walls of mountains rising from the sides of the river almost look like castle walls. You can see several trails of pug-marks all along the trek – footprints belonging to foxes, ibex or snow-leopards. You would be lucky to view a snow-leopard; but you can almost be sure that you are being watched by one all the time. Upon arrival at Shingra Koma, relax and stay overnight at the campsite.

DAY 08 : Shingra Koma To Tilat Sumdo, And Drive To Leh

Shingra Koma – Tilat Sumdo – Leh

This is the last day of treading on the Chadar – the last chance to immerse in the pristine beauty of the frozen river. Once you reach Tilat Sumdo, it is time to say good-bye to the Zanskar and the Zanskaries. Our team and our porters will take good care of you and make this trek one of the most memorable experiences for you. . Upon arrival at Leh, relax and stay overnight at the hotel.
