DAY 01 : Leh (Arrival)

Leh-Shanti Stupa

Upon your arrival at Kushok Bakula Airport, Leh (situated at a height of 3,500 meters), enjoy a warm welcome by our tour representatives and then a transfer to hotel. Flights to Leh are almost as spectacular as our Markha Valley trek. The view of the high snow capped peaks is quite simply put mesmerizing. Landing at Leh is an adventure in itself as the airport strip is between mountains on both the sides. Leh is at an altitude of 10,000 so this day is kept free for acclimatization. During the day, acclimatize yourself with the weather and high pressure of Ladakh. Acclimatizing yourself to high altitude is important to enjoy trekking in Ladakh. In evening visit Shanti Stupa, the central Chowkhang Monastery and the local markets as well. Overnight stay at hotel in Leh.

DAY 02 : Leh Local Sightseeing

Leh Palace-Hemis Monastery-Stok Palace

Today after breakfast, visit Leh Palace, Hemis Monastery and Stok Palace Museum. Stok palace which houses a fine private museum. There is a superb collection of thangkhas, said to be the best in the world. Later, hit the road to Hemis Gompa, which crosses the Indus River at the Karu Village. Built in the 17th century, between 1602 A.D. TO 1642 A.D., Hemis is one of the most famous monasteries in Ladakh. It is also known for the annual festival called Hemis Tsechu. Overnight stay at hotel in Leh.

DAY 03 : Drive From Leh To Spituk & Trek To Zingchen Village (3400m) (2 Hrs Approx)

Leh-Spituk-Zingchen Village

Today on the first day of the Markha Valley trekking, indulge in an early breakfast and drive to Spikut Village from Leh which is about 7 kms away. Reach Spituk early in the morning as it gets very hot in the day time. The trek starts from Spituk. Follow the dirt road from Spituk, along the Indus River, all the way up to Zingchen. It takes about an hour or two to reach Zingchen on foot from Spituk. There are a number of campsites. People who want to take a break can camp here. Overnight stay at Zingchen.

Note:* You can attempt to trek a further 5 km to Yurutse depending upon how well acclimatization has set in. It is advisable not to rush to Yurutse on day 1 of trekking and let the body acclimatize properly especially if you have trekked 15 km on day one.

DAY 04 : Trek From Zingchen To Yurutse (4160 Mts) (4-5 Hrs Approx)

Zingchen-Rumbak Village-Yurutse

Easy trek today. The trail criss-crosses a stream flowing through a gorge. Take the wooden bridge to cross the stream and go to the left of the gorge. Further up move to the right and cross the stream. Enjoy the trail through Rumbak Village to reach Yurutse and come across several stream crossings. It takes about 3hrs to reach Rumbak. About 20-30 min before Rumbak there is a parachute tent. From there head to your right to reach Yurutse. Take the small wooden bridge across the stream which leads to the valley on the right. A 300 m climb from there, brings you to Yurutse village. The site is a winsome one with barley fields all around. Camp besides the lush green barley fields here or stay in one of the 2 home stays.

DAY 05 : Trek From Yurutse (4160m) To Ganda La (4800m) To Skiu (3400m) (8-9 Hrs Approx)

Yurutse-Ganda La-Skiu

Difficult day with long distances to cover via Gandala (Kandala) Pass. Start early. It’s a 1 hour gradual ascent towards Ganda La Base camp. The next stretch from Ganda La base camp to Ganda La pass is a steep climb of two and half hours. This balmy day, in the initial stretch of the trek, ascend to Ganda La (4900 m). Expect a steep climb and strong winds towards the latter half. The rest of the descent is a gradual downhill walk. Once into the valley you see wide open fields and the terrain starts getting dusty and yellow 3 hours of walking brings you to the village of Shingo. Stop for a break here at the tea stall and refresh yourself. There is no source of clean drinking water after Ganda La so make sure you have enough water from Ganda La to Shingo. From Shingo, follow the stream Shingri Nala. It’s a long downhill trek on a rocky terrain. Along the trail you see terrain with red, yellow, green and brown rocks. Skiu is situated at the confluence of Shgri Nala and Markha river. Its takes about 3 and half hour to reach Skiu. You see a monastery in Skiu, nicely placed. Do not miss the beautiful sunset by the Markha river. Overnight stay at Skiu.

Markha Valley Trek

DAY 06 : Trek From Skiu (3400m) To Markha (3800m) (6-7 Hrs Approx)

Skiu-Chalak-Markha Valley

Brace yourself for a long and moderate hike till the charming Markha Village. From Skiu we head east up the Markha Valley. After 2 Kms the trail winds high above the riverbed. The trail is well laid out along the Markha River. In some places you find the direction marked by Bharal Horns. Keep going as you cross the settlements of Narding, Zara and Chalak each having parachute tents. Beyond Chalak, you see green barley fields, colorful birds and huge mounds of baral horns. Trekking along the Markha River we get stunning views of the valley below. We will cross the river at and reach Markha (3800m). Markha is the largest village in the valley, consisting of around 20 houses, an old monastery and a ruined fort. Just before the Markha Valley campsite, is a river crossing. The water level starts to go up later in the afternoon when the sun hits the glacier. See that you hit the river crossing by early afternoon by 3pm. From the crossing it takes 30 minutes to reach the beautiful campsite of Markha. The lush green campsite in the valley is in stark contrast to the magnetic mountains. We have an option of staying in a village home stay in Markha or in our tents for the night.

DAY 07 : Trek From Markha (3770 M) To Thochuntse (4150 M) Via Hankar (3980 M) (5-6 Hrs Approx)

Today is another moderate day for trekking. Follow the trail from Markha village alongside Markha River, remaining at the right side. The Markha valley trail continues passed old stone-mills, a ruined castle and the auspicious monastery of Techa, which is proudly perched upon a cliff that looms above Markha. From there, it’s a gradual climb along the side of the Markha river. 2 hours of climbing brings you to Umlung. After leaving the village of Umlung, we will be afforded our first view of mighty Mt. Kang Yatse (6400m), which will stay in sight until we cross Kongmaru La. After we break for lunch in the village of Hankar (the last one in the valley). After Hankar a rocky and steep ascent brings you to Thochuntse camp site. Enroute you pass through green wheat fields and finally cross a stream. We will select a great camping ground and set tent there. Overnight stay at Thochuntse.

DAY 08 : Trek From Thochuntse (4150m) To Nimaling (4700 M) (4-5 Hrs Approx)

Thochuntse-Kangyatse-Nimaling

Easy trek today. It’s a shorter 6 kms trek to Nimaling. After breakfast we will follow a trail which leads us up to the beautiful plateau of Nimaling, where the people of the Markha Valley bring their herds to graze during the summer months. At 4700m, Nimaling is the highest camp (4600m) on the trek, giving us spectacular views of the huge peak of Kang Yatse to the right. Do note that there is constant wind blowing in the area making situation slightly uncomfortable. If you wish, you can also avail of a side trip today towards the base camp of Kangyatse. The campsite of Nimaling is in a broad valley and is completely exposed to strong winds. When it snows, the green of the valley turns to a complete white carpet. Overnight stay at Nimaling.

DAY 09: Trek From Nimaling (4700m) To Sumdo (3800m) & Drive From Sumdo To Leh (7 Hrs Trek & 2 Hrs Drive)

Nimaling-Kongmaru La-Sukarmo-Sumdo-Leh

Dig into an early breakfast and take on a steep climb to reach the top of the highest pass on the trail – Kongmaru La (5200m). We will cross Kongmaru La (5200m), the highest pass on the trek, and from there we will have a wonderful view of the Indus Valley and Ladakh Range. Take in the great sights of Nun Kun in the West and Saser Kangri to the North. You will have to cross the stream at multiple places. There are ways to avoid the stream crossing if you are prepared to climb the trails high above the stream. There is steep downhill hike till Sukarmo. From Sukarmo to Sumdo it is a river bed walk. From Sumdo you get a motorable road to the highway which is about 8 km away. It takes about 2 hours to reach Leh from Sumdo. Overnight stay at Leh.

DAY 10 : Leh (Departure)

After breakfast check out from hotel and proceed towards KBR airport to catch your flight back home according to your convenience. Your tour ends with sweet memories.
